The first thing you’ll need to do in your journey to restoration is set some goals. Here are some questions to consider that will help you set them:

  • What is the outcome I want to achieve?
  • By when?
  • What are the benefits if I succeed?
  • What are the negatives if I don’t?

Now, to kick off this educational content, we thought starting with failure was the right place. It may seem counterintuitive, but seeing what is at stake is a great motivator to follow through on this process. Understanding the ramifications of doing nothing is crucial to ensuring something actually gets done.

Here are some real-life examples of problems before they were fixed and what the consequences of no action can look like:

Vancouver Lake: Weed Problem

Vancouver Lake discovered that milfoil may cost them millions in community revenue.

Lady Bird Lake: Toxic Cyanobacteria

Several dogs died around Lady Bird Lake, causing the community to panic.

Kitsap Lake: Harmful Algal Blooms

Harmful algae in Kitsap Lake was ruining property values and lake recreation.

Failure is a scary word, and there are real consequences at stake here. But don’t worry, success is very much achievable no matter the situation. Now that we’ve gotten the downer stuff out of the way, let’s pivot to how these Lake & Pond Heroes found success.
