This may be the easiest topic of all. The reason you are on this platform is because you have problems with your lake. Let’s start with some definitions to set the stage going forward, so that you’re not confused.

We are going to define a problem as: the external issues you are facing with your lake. In other words, how does the issue affect you? It could be the fact that you can’t get your boat out on the water. It could be that the algae in your lake smells horribly. It could be that your property value is diminishing. These are all external problems, and you could be dealing with multiple problems at once. The problem then is something that is affecting you directly, and most likely the reason you are seeking help and restoration.

Now let’s define the villain as: the root cause(s) of your problem. It could be invasive weeds, it could be algae, it could be underlying issues with your water quality and excess nutrients. The villain is not as obvious, and most likely you do not have a clear understanding of exactly what your villain is. There are numerous types of invasive aquatic weeds and many types of harmful algae. The experts and guides you find can help you determine what villain is affecting your lake.

Remember when we talked about failure? All of those issues (losing revenue from not holding rowing competitions, dogs dying, home values diminishing) were the external problems those communities were facing. In order to restore their lakes, they had to combat the villains that were at the heart of their problems.

So, write down some of your problems and how they make you feel. In order to solve your problems, we’ve got to first determine the villains below the surface.
